Swinney, Grenache, Frankland River, Australia, 2019

We first profiled their G/S/M blend on the ‘Wonders of Aus’ tasting a while back…and that was a stupendous wine, and we were similarly wowed with this drop. F

Founded in 1922 by the Swinney family and, continuing the strong tradition of producing exceptional Rhone varietal wines, here we have a cracking Grenache. Wonderful undulating hills (looks like a cross between Tuscany and Lancashire) with fantastic soil and adjacent to the Frankland River which regulates the micro-climate brilliantly. This is one seriously brilliant wine but not from the “usual suspect” areas such as Barossa and McLaren Vale, no, this is about 220km inland from the Margaret River area which is “just” south of Perth. We say “just” because it takes looking at a map of Australia to really put into perspective how monstrously large it is.

Wonderful. Cherry, plum and rhubarb. Rose, rosemary, lavender (?), hint of bitter chocolate, oak and 5-spice.

All of the above, with a medium-full juicy body, great intensity, texture and once again, a superb finish. Three absolute belters on show this evening.
