Ktima Gerovassiliou, 'Avaton', Epanomi, Greece, 2017

£20.50

Ktima Gerovassiliou is the brainchild of Evangelos Gerovassiliou. He initiated the revival of the family vineyard by planting the nearly extinct Malagousia in 1981. This state of the art winery is now surrounded by 72 hectares of meticulously well cared vineyards on the slopes of Epanomi. Ktima Gerovassiliou guarantees consistent, high quality wines of international acclaim every year and his Malagousia remains the benchmark to this day.

At Ktima Gerovassiliou, the single, private vineyard is cultivated with great care and enthusiasm, which leads to constant research and experimentation with Greek and international varieties. New technological advances blend well with tradition throughout the vine growing and vinification processes to produce high quality wines that carry all the distinct characteristics of the terroir of Epanomi.

The Avaton: The vintage of 2017 was the coldest year experienced in the last 30 years in this region. A long, heavy winter was followed by a cool spring which provided some beneficial rain, which led to optimal growing and maturation conditions. The red wines reached optimum phenolic maturation, have great structure and concentrated varietal aromas. The harvest started on 13th August and was completed on 8th September. The 60% Limnio (pronounced LIM-neeo), 20% Mavrotragano (Mavro- TRAH- gano) and 20% Mavroudi (Mav- ROO- dee) grapes were each fermented in small oak casks of 40 hectolitres. The wine went through malolactic conversion before being aged in French oak barrels for a period of 15 months.

Nose:

Luscious and ripe. Black plum, cherry and raisin with espresso, chocolate, spice, olive tapenade and leather. Lovely floral hint.

Palate:

Yum! Smooth, medium on the palate, sweet yet savoury. Great depth, polished and with a lovely spiced finish
