Chateau Orisse du Casse, St Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux, 2018

One of life’s great pleasures, in the wine world at least, is when your bottles turn up in one of those fabulous wooden crates – as is the case with the Orisse. St Emilion is arguably the most popular appellation in Bordeaux and almost certainly one of the most picturesque, but it is also very accessible. Here we have 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from the right bank, aged in French oak. This could easily be drinkable for the next 10-15 years.A truly lovely example.

This wine is 15.5% so really benefits from decanting (or pouring into your glass well ahead of drinking). Let the aromas and flavours open up and that big alcohol hit mellow out. Then this will blow your socks off for the right reasons. And trust us, it's an absolute gem.

Dark fruits. Blackberry cassis. Plums. Sweet spices and vanilla.Tobacco and cedar. Dark chocolate. Hint of smoke and leather.

All of the above. Firm on the palate with great tannins and acidity which complement the depth of flavour.

Classic beef and lamb dishes, game, poultry, Lamprey a la Bordelaise (one of George’s), confit duck leg with Puy lentils, kidneys and oxtail. Blimey that has made us hungry!
